Saul Bass lived in America and was famous for graphic design
and the film posters he made. He was also best known for the title sequences he
made. Which were motion pictures. Saul Bass used lots of simple shapes in his
title sequences, which creates meaning to the film. Saul Bass was a student at Art Students
League. He then got a apprenticeship with Manhattan design firms. Then after
this he worked as a freelance graphic designer. With the images and shapes Saul
Bass used on his title sequences he captured the mood of the film. Saul Bass
hand drew the shapes. Which gives it a good effect and a normal appearance.
Saul Bass worked with a lot of star directors such as Martin
Scorsese, Stanley Kurbrick and Alfred Hitchcock.
For our homework we had to film a fight scene. For our fight me and Alfie played a couple that just broke up and we end up having a fight. We made it into a comedy fight scene as if is a really stupid fight were it looks like were playing around. We also had to add foley sound to the fight scene.
Words and lettering played an enormous role in films of the silent era.
Word and lettering would had played enormous role in the film era as they didn't have sound to connect the audience. So they would of used letter and words to the viewer would understand whats going on in the film. This was a big thing for the silent films because without it the viewers wouldn't be able to follow it and have an insight on whats going to happen. they also wouldn't know who had written, directed or starred in the film.
The studio systems operating in Europe and Hollywood also delighted in creating titles that featured vernacular graphic novelties.
Film titles soon developed as when it got to the 1920's and 30's they moved on from silent films and words and lettering films. They also used graphic's in there films titles. They also began to use the title lettering a bit more better as they make sure it had meaning to the font and colour. for example when it came to horror they used black letter front and then for love they would use flowery lettering.
This is the era in which the discipline of film title sequence design was actually born.
Some directors gave the viewers a shock as they started to open there title sequence with a opening scene. Theses were in the bonds films and also the pink panther series. Saul Bass used montage, live action also cut-out paper animation in his title sequences.In the 1950's using three-dimensional lettering for there title sequences was really popluar as people enjoyed watching it.
Every sphere of contemporary life — and especially the film business — has been affected by computers.
when it came to the 1990's and techology developed the film business changed alot as they could do loads of work on the computers. the title sequences improved and also the special effects they do in the films improved as they had the more improved equipment to do this. disney and pixar were known for making title sequences and also with animated characters to introduce the viewer to the film.
Throughout the history of cinema, film titles have evolved with the film industry, as well as with social trends and fashion movements.
Title sequences has always been a big part in the movies from the 1910's up until today and they have improved more and more over the years. the title sequences shows the viewer about the film and what genre of film it is as well without telling the viewer the whole story of the film. The title sequence can also make the film what it is and be known for that. they title sequence are very important and always have been throughtout history. They have changed over the years but always had the same meaning to them.
In the title sequence there's a lot of red and black which is normally linked to death,danger or the devil; there's bloods spats in the video which also foreshadows that something bad is going to happen which causes death. It also tells us as the viewers that the film is going to be in the genre of horror or thriller. With the title zombie lands also leads the viewer to think that this is a thriller or horror as zombie films are normally in the category of thrillers or horrors. the title is also bold and is in capitals which also shows that its a horror or thriller film.
The music in the background also tells the viewer that its not a peaceful and calm film, it shows us that its a loud, fast and noisy film with the music that there playing in the background. the music is rock music. also with all the different tones of instruments in it,sometimes the tones are very sharp and high pitched which can relate to screaming. this also shows the viewer that this is going to be a horror or thriller film. This shows the viewer what kind of people the characters are in the film and what there going to be like.
One of the characters name 'Emma Stone' was on a gun which can indicates that she might be a character which does a lot of killings and uses the gun a lot through out the film. There's also hand prints which also links to horror or thriller films with blood hand prints. which will also show the viewer that the film genre is.
The way the names are presented is very quick and sharp by how its just comes onto the screen. Also with the different patterns and the shapes come together shows that there a lot going on. The way it moves goes along with the music so it all links together and shows the genre of the film.
