Title sequences notes

A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, titillating conceptual visuals and sound.

This is important because it gives information on the film, gives insight on the characters, give credit to people, about cast, age range, make first impression. FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE EVERYTHING.

The opening title sequence of a film is that film's opportunity to make a good first impression on you, the viewer a well crafted title sequence introduces the audience to the tone and theme of the film as well as the cast and crew.

Codes and convention
typically on opening sequences will contain;
-Details of cast and crew.
-the film's title.
-An introduction to character or character type
-Indication on place.
-Indication of historical period.
-Information regarding mood and tone.
-Introduction to signature them tune.
-Information about genre.
-Questions that the viewer finds intriguing( sets up enigmas).
-Patterns and types of editing that will changed in the remainder of the film.
-Mise en scene and cinematography that will be echoed or elaborated upon later in the film.

Coraline

The genre of the film is children horror this is constructed by the music in the background and the noise of a deep piano, which give the title sequence a thrilling aspect. The scenes are very dark which normally indicates that’s the films going to be a horror. With the film being cartoon shows that it’s a children horror also with the humming and singing in the background. Which are normally in children films as if they’re trying to get a child to sleep.

Opening titles normally gives an insight on the film and tells the viewer what it about before they watch it. It also makes the viewer more attracted to the film once they’ve watched the beginning. The enigmas created in the title sequence are the doll. It will get the viewer thinking why is that doll getting changed into a different person, why is it getting changed to a different person and also who is changing the doll.

The shots in the title sequence are close up most of the time when the doll is getting made. It also has a shot where you see the doll fly out of the window. All the shots are from the person who is making the doll, so the viewer feels like there looking through those person’s eyes.

The genre of music that has been chosen is twisted fairy tale. As it has fairy tale music but its been twisted to give it the horror side of the film. The filmmakers put this track into the film to give it the twisted feel to the film and to make the viewers understand that it is also a children horror film. You can also hear children voices, which again show that the film is targeted for children.

 The effects this track has on the title sequence is that it gives the viewer what the film is about and what type of film is going to be. It also makes the title sequence what it is because if the music weren’t there it would have been hard to understand that it is a children’s horror. I would describe it as a twisted fairy tale theme tune as it has the fairy tale sound but it’s just darker and has more twisted sound.

The sequence has been edited to look like your viewing it from the person eyes. In the beginning of the sequence there is an elliptical editing where it shows time going by. There’s also a match on action where you see the button on the side with loads of different ones then it moves to the side where its just on its own.

There’s also another match on action where you see the metal hand spin the wheel on the sewing machine then you see the hands again on the fabric sewing it together.

The transitions on the title sequence is that it shows the step by step of the doll getting made but in a shorter amount of time as if times going by. Like elliptical editing where it shows the viewer what’s happening in a shorter amount of time so it does get boring with the viewer see the doll get completely made.

The pace of the edit is quick as it shows what happens over a short amount of time. It doesn’t really changes it maintains on the doll and how that’s getting made.  It doesn’t really shows any more to keep it secret for the film so people will have to find out in the end who the person is making the doll and also why there making it.
